The Sages established the "Fast of Gedaliah" on the 3rd of Tishrei, the day after Rosh Hashanah, as a day of mourning and fasting in memory of Gedaliah and to commemorate the national disaster caused by his assassination. This fast teaches about the importance of unity among the Jewish people and the danger of division and baseless hatred. The name Gedaliah carries profound historical and moral weight.
